The first integrated advanced DOS and desktop networking environment
Novell DOS 7 is the first DOS that fully integrates advanced DOS technology with networking. Novell DOS 7 advances the DOS standard with multitasking and protected mode extensions, while maintaining full compatibility with the vast installed base of DOS and Microsoft* Windows applications and drivers. Its fully integrated networking makes Novell DOS 7 the best peer-to-peer network solution and the best DOS client operating system for the NetWare network operating system.
INTEGRATED NETWORKING
Novell DOS 7 provides the first fully integrated networking DOS, with peer-to-peer networking, the Universal NetWare Client, and industry-standard network management included.
Personal NetWare Server
The Personal NetWare Server included with Novell DOS 7 provides peer-to-peer networking for DOS and MS Windows computers. It is an easy-to-use, robust and reliable solution for sharing files, printers and other resources and is ideal for workgroups on an existing NetWare network or first-time network users.
Universal NetWare Client
The Universal NetWare Client is the network redirector that allows Novell DOS 7 to access resources on any NetWare 2.x, 3.x or 4.0 file server or any computer running the Personal NetWare Server. This allows users to access enterprise-wide as well as workgroup resources with a consistent set of DOS and MS Windows utilities.
Network Management Network management is critical for any environment where resources are shared. Novell DOS 7 includes industry-standard SNMP agents, Management Information Base (MIB), a diagnostic responder and utilities to monitor and manage shared resources. All network utilities can be accessed through the user's choice of a full-screen DOS or MS Windows interface.
ADVANCED DOS TECHNOLOGY
Novell DOS 7 is the first DOS with protected mode drivers and preemptive multitasking. Users benefit from advanced DOS utilities and system extensions, security, compatibility, flexible configurations, and ease of use.
Protected Mode Drivers
DOS Protected Mode Services (DPMS) allows compliant resident programs and device drivers to run in protected mode and use extended memory instead of valuable application memory. This leaves more conventional, upper and high memory free for application programs and other uses. The disk cache, Stacker* disk compression, Personal NetWare Server, delete tracking and CD-ROM extensions provided with Novell DOS 7 all use DPMS. This gives users a wider range of features than any other DOS without compromising memory for applications. DPMS also works with third-party memory managers and is fully compatible with MS Windows.
Multitasking
Novell DOS 7 provides efficient preemptive multitasking to allow multiple DOS programs to execute simultaneously, enhancing the user's productivity. The multitasker supports multiple DOS extended DPMI client applications such as Lotus* 1-2-3 v3.1 and Paradox*, a single MS Windows session, and graphics programs running in the background.
Disk Compression
Novell DOS 7 includes Stacker, the industry-leading disk compression software, that doubles the capacity of hard drives and removable media. Stacker provides the highest level of reliability and integration available in any DOS and includes utilities to instantly convert MS-DOS* Double Space and DR DOS" SuperStor* compressed disks. Stacker disk compression uses DPMS to minimize its use of conventional memory.
Disk Performance and Management
Novell DOS 7 includes a full suite of advanced disk utilities. The DPMS-compliant disk cache and disk optimizer speed disk access. Delete tracking and undelete utilities allow users to recover from accidental data loss. Both DOS and MS Windows versions of Fifth Generation Fastback Express file backup and Search & Destroy anti-virus utilities safeguard important data.
Security
Novell DOS 7 provides comprehensive workstation security. In addition to secure hard disks, Novell DOS 7 security allows the owner or system administrator to control access to both the PC and selected resources for specified time periods. Users gain access to the PC and the network simultaneously with a single login password.
CD-ROM Extensions
Novell DOS 7 includes an MSCDEX compatible redirector to provide access to CD-ROM media. The CD-ROM redirector uses DPMS, which dramatically reduces its use of conventional memory.
Flexible Configurations
Novell DOS 7 enhances CONFIG.SYS and batch file processing to support flexible configurations. Prompt statements, conditional commands and menuing enable users to support multiple boot-time and runtime scenarios within a single configuration or batch file.
Compatibility and Ease of Use
Novell DOS 7 is fully compatible with the installed base of DOS and MS Windows applications. Easy-to-use on-line documentation, with hypertext links, eliminates the need for bulky paper manuals. DOS utilities provide a common full-screen interface with drop down menus. Network utilities are both DOS and MS Windows based with the same look and feel for either interface.
A COMPLETE PACKAGE
Novell DOS 7 is the most advanced and comprehensive DOS and desktop network environment. It provides the best value for all PC-compatible computers, whether they are NetWare clients, configured in a peer-to-peer network or not networked at all.
